Short Message Service (SMS) is a text messaging service component of phone, web, or mobile communication systems, using standardized communications protocols that allow the exchange of short text messages between fixed line or mobile phone devices.While SMS is still a growing market, traditional SMS are becoming increasingly challenged by alternative messaging services which are available on smartphones with data connections, especially in western countries where some of these services attract users.In nation building it contributes in many ways. SMS text messaging is the most widely used data application in the world, with 2.4 billion active users, or 74% of all mobile phone subscribers , so through SMS govt. can communicate with large numbers of people at the same time . It can be used as a powerful tool in business , improving economy , election compaign , awareness ,motivating people too etc. Nowdays banking is also done through SMS . When bank introduce any new policy or scheme they alert their customers through SMS. It played vital in communicating with large number of people and latest example is the use of SMS in ANNA's movement against corruption in India, in this they send messages to the people to become volunteer in the movement or to support the movement by taking part in that and in this way they got too much of support from throughout the nation. Police of various countries has started many ways of stopping crime through SMS for example Boston police are now turning to text messaging to help stop crime. The Boston Police Department has established a program in which one can text in a crime tip anonymously to help stop crimes. Like this many of the Police department had started such programs.
Also it can help in spreading awareness amongst the people about various programs related to them , like programs started for the poor people , students , ladies , widows , seniour citizens etc.. Alerts messages or messages about such programs can be send. Also in this way the literacy level will be improved and it will decrease the unemployment level in the nation. So in such ways SMS can help in developing a nation.
